He was born into a family of lawyers. Attended Columbia College from1880 to 1882, where he became editor of Columbia's literary magazine, Acta Columbia, and wrote short anonymous articles for humorous magazines. In 1883 he graduated from the University with a bachelor's degree in political science. Then went to the Law School of the same University, but soon left it to become assistant editor of Life magazine.
