English poet, playwright, and songwriter. He was the only son of an influential citizen of Bath, England. He was related to the Earl of Stamford on his mother's side. He showed a talent for poetry at a very early age, writing dramatic tales as early as eight years old. At the age of seventeen he entered his father's office to study law, but soon decided to devote himself to writing humorous articles for newspapers and magazines.
