English writer, playwright, novelist, translator, and publicist. Eighth child and fifth son of the 1st Baron of Revolstoke of Membland. Educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge University. After an unsuccessful start to his career as a diplomat, he traveled extensively, especially in Russia. At the beginning of World War I he joined the Royal Flying Corps. In 1925 he was promoted to the rank of a link commander in the Air Force Officers' Reserve.
