English writer and poet known for his short stories. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, he was educated at Charterhouse and Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he received a bachelor of science, but nevertheless was interested in the humanities, modern literature, music and art. During World War I, he joined the Volunteer Artillery Regiment as a soldier and rose to the rank of lieutenant. After serving in the army, he became a journalist and editor. As a result of his inclusion in a collection of Georgian poetry (1922) edited by Edward Marsh, he is counted among the Georgian poets.
