Kul Sharif, the exact date of birth is not known. Imam, religious figure of the 16th century, poet, who led the defence of one of the parts of Kazan in October 1552 against the troops of Ivan the Terrible. The fact that Kul Sharif really existed during the Kazan Khanate is evidenced by many historical sources, including philosopher and thinker Shigabutdin Marjani, who conducted research and collected historical information. According to the collected data, it can be concluded that Kul Sharif at the time of the fall of the khanate was the head of the Muslim clergy. Tatars considered Kul Sharif a great hero and "amir". Descendants of Prophet Mohammed who were in a patrimonial line going to his grandson Hussein ibn Ali, Muslims name Sayyid. Kul Sharif belonged to this lineage and was also considered a Sayyid.
He was killed in an attack in 1552. The Kul Sharif Mosque, built-in 1996-2005 in the Kazan Kremlin in place of the demolished old mosque, is named after him.
