American poetess. Born into a Congregationalist pastor's family. She graduated from Needham High School in 1872, Newton High School in 1875, and Wellesley College in 1880 with a bachelor's degree; at the same college she later taught, received her master's degree, and became professor of English literature. Bates was the author of many poetry works, travel books, and children's books. She is best known as the author of the words to the anthem America is Beautiful and as the creator of the image of Mrs. Santa Claus in the poem "Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride.
