Australian poet, and critic, was a professor of English at the University of Sydney. He was born into the family of the famous Sydney physician John Le Guay Brereton, who published five volumes of poetry. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and, later, at the University of Sydney, where he received a bachelor's degree. He was editor of the student literary yearbook Hermes and served as university librarian.
