American botanist, doctor of medicine, physician, mechanic, and poet. He was born into the family of a Congregational minister. At the age of sixteen, he entered Harvard College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1806, and then attended medical lectures at the Boston Latin School. He then studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1810 with the degree of a physician.
