Norwegian writer, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903, author of the text of the national anthem of Norway. He was born in Bjørgan homestead in the secluded village of Kvikne in the region of Österdalen in the family of a local pastor. He began writing poetry at the age of 11. He studied at the University of Oslo. In adulthood, he was engaged in politics, in particular, was a prominent representative of the Norwegian left-wing movement. Served as director of the theater in Bergen. Traveled extensively in Europe, and died in Paris.
