Born in Athens, Ohio. Graduated from Williams College 1874 and became principal of Lenox High School, Massachusetts. Later he was appointed principal of Lenox Academy, where he founded the Agassiz Association, a national organization for the study of natural sites, which eventually had over 1,000 chapters worldwide. He was a member of the Masson Lodge.
